Vastu Shastra

Introduction

The word Vaastu means a dwelling. Vaastu Shilpa means the science of house building. The science of house building is very ancient in India. The knowledge has come down from creator Brahma through an unbroken succession of sages. According to the Vishwakarma Vaastu Shastra, the celestial architect Lord Brahma got a thorough knowledge of his science from Lord Shiva. The present day Vaastu owes its origin mainly to 125 verses contained in Brihat Sanhita of Varahamihira.

Man builds the House for his home. Nature consists of five elements SAFEW viz., Sky (Space), Air (Atmosphere), Fire, Earth and Water. Vaastu is the means of capturing the positive bountiful power of the three elements: the Earth, the Water, the Fire, (the Sun) in a proper and proportional manner, along with the Air, in our House, making it the Abode for all of them, for peace and prosperity of the Human Beings; and the World (Vishwam) at large.

Gruha Pravesh

Gruha Pravesh is the first entry into a newly built house. This is important not only to the inhabitants of the house, but also holds great significance in Vaastu Shastra. Living in a house after its completion requires one to look into certain auspicious moment determined on astrological considerations. There are three types of Gruha Pravesh that are mentioned in our ancient scriptures -

1. First entry to live in a house that is newly constructed on a newly selected land is called Apoorva or new Gruha Pravesh.

2. Entry in an already existing house to live in it after travelling abroad or migration elsewhere is called Sapoorva Gruha Pravesh.

3. Entry into a house to live in it after reconstruction/renovation of the house damaged by fire, flood waters, electricity and wind is termed as Dwandwah (or old) Gruha Pravesh.

As per our scriptures, Gruha Pravesh has to be done at an auspicious time (muhurat) as per Panchang. If certain principles of Vaastu are not followed, (for example, if the doors of a house are not fitted with shutters, the roof is uncovered or the gods of Vaastu have not been worshipped and offered sacrifices), living in that house will be full of trouble and misery. Hence, it is essential to offer sacrifices and worship Vaastu Gods as per the procedures laid down in scriptures. It is always auspicious to have Gruha Pravesh done in the day. For the ceremony of giving food to a child for the first time (Anna Prashan), wearing new clothes, daily travels, first entry into an old renovated house and entry of a bride in the house, the position of stars or nakshatra should be considered. Auspicious months for Gruha Pravesh are Magh (symbolising gain of wealth), Falgun (symbolising gain of children and wealth), Vaishakh (symbolising growth of wealth and prosperity) and Jeshtha (gain of son and cattle).
Besides these, the months of Kartik and Margshirsh give medium results. Gruha Pravesh in the months of Ashadh, Shravan, Bhadrapad and Ashwin Paush is inauspicious and causes loss, trouble, pain and fear of enemies. Avoid the entry into a house on Tuesdays.
